More details
iOS 18 is supported by the same iPhone models as iOS 17, dating back to the iPhone XS that was released in 2018. Apple’s long-term support for iPhone models ensures that users are getting access to as many new features as possible along with important security improvements and bug fixes.
In recent years, Apple has also made it easier for users to stay on their current version of iOS if they aren’t quite ready to make the jump to the next major release. For example, when Apple released iOS 18 in September, it also released iOS 17.7. iPhone users were given a choice between updating to iOS 18 to access all the update’s new features or update to iOS 17.7. If users chose to update to iOS 17.7, they could avoid any potential bugs that come with a major new iOS release while simultaneously getting all of the important security fixes and other improvements.
Most recently, Apple released iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2 in November with important security fixes. Again, this ensures that users have the most secure experience possible even if they’ve chosen not to update to iOS 18.
