iPhone 17 line might get key hardware change to boost Apple Intelligence performance

iPhone 17 in-house chip

Apple Intelligence is in its early stages, but it’s already leading to big changes in Apple hardware such as increased RAM and chip upgrades. Now, a new rumor indicates another key hardware change is coming to the full iPhone 17 lineup that will help with AI.

Better cooling rumored for iPhone 17 lineup, likely the Apple Intelligence effect

Chinese tech site MyDrivers has shared a new rumor saying that Apple plans to upgrade its full iPhone 17 lineup with new hardware for heat dissipation (via MacRumors).

Here’s a Google Translate excerpt of the relevant portion:

According to the latest news from the industry chain, in order to improve the heat dissipation performance of the iPhone, Apple will add heat dissipation devices to the iPhone 17 series, and all models will be equipped with VC [vapor chamber] heat sinks for heat dissipation.

We had heard previously via Ming-Chi Kuo that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would adopt a special vapor chamber plus graphite cooling sheet system.

Essentially, this would take the graphite cooling tech already used in iPhones and pair it with a vapor chamber.

Kuo said at the time that the other iPhone 17 models would stick with the existing graphite sheet approach, however.

9to5Mac’s Take

It should be noted that MyDrivers doesn’t have much history with Apple rumors, so take this report with an appropriate level of skepticism. Especially since Ming-Chi Kuo shared something different last summer.

That said, Apple bringing changes to the cooling system in iPhones makes a lot of sense. Apple Intelligence features are only expected to grow tremendously in the years ahead. Thus, cooling could be a concern for iPhone 17 models and beyond.

It’s also not out of the question that Apple has changed its iPhone 17 plans since Kuo’s August report. So while MyDrivers may not have the track record of Kuo, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this rumor prove true.
